In terms of microwave heating pad's filling, you have many options from which to choose. rice and dried beans and sea salt are three of the more common ones. These popular fillings are about the same in volume and weight and have similar heating properties. Take a look at the PROS and CONS
Dried Beans
PROS – very good heat retention, easy to find at grocery stores in bulk, inexpensive to replace, does not break down like rice
CONS – may take on a peculiar odor after repeated microwaving (or freezing) and need to be replaced
Rice
PROS – very good heat retention, easy to find at grocery stores in bulk, inexpensive to replace
CONS – breaks down easily after repeated microwaving (and freezing) therefore will take on a peculiar odour, lavender or other fragrances are recommended to mask the odour, needs to be replaced often
Sea Salt
PROS- very good heat retention, naturally anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal. Sea salt retains its minerals and moisture, making it easy to be absorbed by the body.
CONS-not readily available at grocery stores, absorbs moisture from air. Need keep the sea salt pack in in an airtight container after usage.
